Episode 5
They had left the coffee shop and were walking down a corridor in Nakano Broadway. Music emanating from various shops mingled and reverberated down the long passageway, producing a sound like a raucous uproar. With Ena prattling on, the uproar slightly increased. "Huh?" Still chattering away, Ena had fixed her gaze on a capsule-figure vending machine, a wistful look on her face. "Go ahead." "Can I?" Even Kanako would probably forgive her a turn at the vending machine. He nodded, and Ena ran toward the machine looking like a child on Christmas morning. From the backpack: "Drop dead." Ena was at it for more than half an hour. Tomoya watched her for a while, smiling as she rejoiced or grieved over the capsules that came out of the machine, but the backpack became increasingly heavy. From time to time there was wriggling inside; it was the worst possible nuisance. He was trying to calm down the monster riding on his back when a strange, fake voice suddenly rang out. "Ah, my feet hurt. I'm so tired." He went pale. Ena, mistaking the voice for Tomoya's, finally snapped out of it. She jumped up and, with a heartrending look of panic, said, "I'm so sorry! I got completely carried away!" "Not at all. It's all right, really. I was enjoying myself." His heart was thumping out an eight-beat. He put a headlock on the moving backpack and followed Ena out of the shop. Perhaps because she was embarrassed, Ena had gone quiet. Tomoya wasn't talking either; an awkward impasse ensued. They got on the direct escalator to the first floor. They were about halfway there when Ena started fumbling around in her bag. She took something out and pressed it into Tomoya's hand. "It's a double, so you can have it. You can throw it away if you don't want it." It was a capsule figure. She was probably trying to make amends. He felt better but wasn't quite sure what to do. "Oh, well, thanks." Tomoya didn't have the heart to turn it down. |
