Bamboo craftwork
Kyoto's hot summers and cold winters create ideal conditions for a variety of bamboo that is used in high-quality craftwork, such as woven Kyo sudare blinds. The blinds are used to screen out the sun, or temporarily divide a room. Just looking at them makes one feel cooler on a hot day. Specialty stores sell a wide variety of bamboo ware, including baskets and flower vases. (Prices for blinds start at 5,000 yen.)
