The fox is considered to be a messenger of the god of rice at Fushimi Inari Shrine, 1 on map.
Inside the shrine compound there are innumerable stone statues of foxes holding keys, balls and other things in their mouths.
Center left photo: The shrine is especially noted for its many small torii gates, which are placed so close together they almost give a tunnel.
