Kara-kami paper
Patterns are printed with a wooden block, using a technique developed more than 300 years ago. This type of paper was originally used to cover sliding fusuma doors. Today it is also used to make things like coasters (left; 315 yen) and postcards (far left; prices start at 270 yen).

Go-shiki mame
These five colored peas are one of Kyoto's best-known sweet confectionaries. Peas are roasted and then covered with a sugary coating. The box contains five flavors, each identified by a different color: white, covered with sugar only; red, plum flavoring; yellow, Chinese lemon; brown, cinnamon; green, nori seaweed. (Price, including the small box covered in chiyo-gami paper, 1,020 yen)
