(11)   Shoka Sonjuku Academy, opened by Yoshida Shoin. The academy accepted students of any rank or class. From here, many people went out to lay the foundations of modern Japan. Yoshida taught the Analects of Confucius, military science, history, geography and other subjects.

(12)   Shoin-jinja Shrine,dedicated to the memory of Yoshida Shoin. Another shrine, Shomon-jinja, was built on the grounds to commemorate his students.

(13)   An old canal called Aiba-gawa, running through the old castle town district. It was constructed in 1739 for irrigation and transportation purposes.

Hagi is also a fishing port. For centuries, it has been a prosperous center for boats catching horse mackerel, squid and other marine life.

(16)(17) Okafuji Tetsuhiko working at his potter's wheel at Hagi-yaki Kaikan. Hagi-ware bowls used in the tea ceremony are famous, but excellent dinnerware and other pottery, like saké bottles and cups,are also made here.

(18) The Hagi reverberating furnace was constructed in 1858 to make cannon and other weapons. It stands 11.5 meters tall and is made from heat-resistant bricks and basalt blocks. Apparently it was almost never used.
