The coelacanth is an ancient fish that first appeared on earth around 400 million years ago. Once thought to be extinct, in 1938 it was discovered to be living in waters off the coast of South Africa. This mysterious creature holds clues as to how land-dwelling animals evolved from fish. Japanese researchers are busily researching the coelacanth in the hope of finding new clues to the mysteries of evolution.
