Dona Dona Chan lives with a yellow chick "Biyo-chan" who has a huge appetite, while next door lives a scary-looking man. A variety of other curious characters appear as well, including a wild cat "Chidarake-san" who is always covered in blood and a pink cat "Ru-Ru Chan" whom Dona Dona Chan idolizes.

But Dona Dona Chan isn't just a miserable little cat; with a single-minded attitude, she strives for life as best she can in spite of all her worries and fears. The story gives readers a chuckle as well as warming their hearts.
