Special FeatureOkinawa’s Beautiful Sea
Kabira Bay is one of the beauty spots of Ishigaki Island. The color of the sea varies from place to place, moment to moment, depending on the level of the tide and the angle of the sun. The bay is also famous for its cultivated black pearls.
Mangrove roots form an underwater maze. The tidal flats on Iriomote Island are a treasure trove of marine life. Mangroves grow fast, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen in ample amounts, contributing to a better balance for the global atmosphere.
Harii races are held in different parts of Okinawa in May and June every year. Originally part of a ritual prayer for safety at sea and a good catch of fish, today they are part of a sea festival. Teams compete with each other, throwing up spray as they race to the finish.
