How About Going to a Hot Spring?
The Japanese love hot springs. Just seeing the steam rising up from a hot pool helps relieve their stress. There are more than 3,000 hot spring resorts throughout the Japanese archipelago, and the number keeps growing gradually each year. What is it about spas that people find so appealing? To answer this question, our special feature looks at some typical resorts in Japan and the attractions they offer.
Yubatake ("Steaming Water Field") is one of the most famous places at Kusatsu Spa. The volume of water gurgling up at this natural spring 5,000 liters per minute is greater than at any other hot spring in Japan. The water, at a temperature of about 56°C (132.8°F), passes through one of the seven rows of the wooden framework in the left background, and then is channeled to the inns.
