In addition to academic subjects, Zenrin Gakuen offers special classes in both the practice and teachings of Shorinji Kempo as well as practical training in agriculture.
Although the class for eleventh graders this day is devoted to the concepts behind the martial art, the teacher demonstrates actual techniques that reflect such teachings. Textbooks are also actively used to convey the concepts and techniques. At the fourth-floor dojo, pairs of students practice the moves that were demonstrated by Mr. Iino Takatsugu. At the end of class, everyone expresses their appreciation with a gassho rei. Students receive advice like, "Maintain proper posture" as they perfect each move through repetition.
Tenth graders, meanwhile, receive practical instruction at the main hall. The practice is very physical, requiring everyone to wear protective gear. After Mr. Sudo Tomoyuki demonstrates the moves with one of the students, the students pair up to repeat the moves over and over. By offering advice and encouragement to each other, they work on improving their techniques.
Students enjoy watching their plants grow.
There are enough computers for everybody.
Students divide up into small groups and grow vegetables according to their own plans within a given budget. They harvest what they grow and write up a report on the experience.
The fields lie near the school on a hill, and spinach and lettuce are now growing there. Some groups have even built a greenhouse. Each plot is marked by a sign identifying the group. One student who was tilling the soil said, "We planted radish seeds in a warm place inside the dormitory, and we're waiting for them to sprout. As soon they do, we're going to plant them in the field."
With a report on farming activities due the following week, some students were busy typing up their comments in the computer room.
