(10)(11) The castle town of Kitsuki had its center in a commercial district in a valley, and included two hilly regions (to the north and south) where samurai lived. The steep streets create a lasting impression.

(12)(13) Beppu's hot springs produce enough thermal energy to boil eggs or steam pudding. It took six minutes to soft boil these eggs.

Image (14) Takegawara Onsen, Beppu's oldest public bath, was founded in 1879.

Image (15) At the Mountain Hell Spa, steam hisses out of cracks in the rock, as if from volcanic mountains.

Image (16) Huts where yunohana (flowers of sulfur) are gathered at Myoban Spa. The "flowers" are sulfur crystals that have settled to the bottom of hot pools.

Image (18) This plaster kote-e is a picture ( e ) made with a trowel ( kote ). Kote-e were first made around the 18th century. The colored plaster stands out in relief, decorating a house in Hiji-machi.

Image (19) When these fish were auctioned off early in the morning in Hiji-machi, the boisterous voices of the buyers and sellers were quite impressive.
