Japanease Travelogue KUNISAKI AND BEPPU

Image (1) The Main Hall at Fuki-ji Temple is a National Treasure. The temple is said to date from the year 718.

Image (2) This statue of the god Nio stands guard at the gate to Fuki-ji Temple.

Image (3) Three Buddhist images known collectively as kawanaka fudo have been carved from a huge rock in the river.

Image (4) Statue of Dai-itoku Myo-o in Maki Odo Hall. The hall burned to the ground about 700 years ago, but nine stone Buddhist statues, including this one, were saved. They now stand in the present Main Hall, which was reconstructed in 1967.

Image (5) Shiitake mushrooms are one product for which Oita Prefecture is famous. The spawn is inserted into logs cut to about 1 meter in length.

Image (6) Rice fields are a common sight in Kunisaki valleys.

Image (7) It is said that a demon built this stone stairway in one night. The steps lead to the kumano magaibutsu images.

Image (8) This strange rock formation, called sannomiya-no-kei , is on the upper reaches of the Katsura-gawa River, which flows from the middle of the peninsula to the northwest. Unusual scenes like this abound in the region.

Image (9) Transplanting rice seedlings. We came across these farmers on our way to see the kawanaka fudo . This is a typical scene around the month of June every year.
