a) A writing mat. Students place a writing mat under the sheet of paper they are writing on, to protect the paper beneath.

When writing in their notebooks, students place a writing mat under the page they are working on. The writing mat is made of plastic and is typically about 0.5 millimeters thick. It is the same size height and width as a notebook. Even if a student presses hard with the pencil, the writing mat protects the following sheets of paper from marks and indentations. It also helps the student write more smoothly.

Many kids use mats that are printed with pictures or photos of their favorite characters, famous athletes, and so on.

Kids have developed many novel uses for writing mats. In hot weather, for example, a writing mat can double as a fan!
