Japanese birthday celebrations for children are very similar to those that take place in Western countries. Friends are invited to the family home, the guests bring birthday presents, "Happy Birthday" is sung, the kids play games, and they eat birthday cake after the child with the birthday blows out the candles.
Before World War II, though, everyone marked their becoming a year older at New Year, and there was no custom of birthday celebrations. Birthday celebrations became widespread after the end of the war.
