Mizuki Shigeru Road
On holidays, children and parents crowd the shopping street. There you can meet the characters from Gegege no Kitaro.
Sakaiminato City initiated efforts to develop and maintain its tourist facilities, including Mizuki Shigeru Road, in 1993. The City's original objective was to revitalize the shopping area by using the name recognition of the characters to attract community and regional residents. One after another, however, the bronze statues were destroyed or stolen, and news of the vandalism drew attention to the existence of Mizuki Shigeru Road all throughout Japan. The reputation the district has acquired as a highly entertaining venue for people of all ages, whether or not they are fans of Gegege no Kitaro, has made it a major tourist destination. It attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year.
