One secret to Perfume’s popularity is the refreshing combination of their “pop idol” status with their techno sound. (In Japan they are known as a “techno-pop idol unit.”) Their vocals are driven by an upbeat electronic rhythm, while their dancing conveys a sense of something inorganic and futuristic. Their robotic movements may be somewhat comical, but the band strives to be artistic in such areas as their fashion and the artwork on their CD jackets. The members of Perfume give the impression that they are pushing at the boundaries of the modern world.
The girls of Perfume have held on to their native Hiroshima dialects, and when they talk with one another, their conversations are lively and down-to-earth. As well as their singing and dancing, the individuality and hometown pride of the Perfume girls are also among the secrets to their success.
