 Most students commute by train, so the streets from the station to the school are a sea of navy and gray uniforms in the morning. Kids either bring their own lunches or eat in the cafeteria, and after school, many participate in club activities. |

Most students enter the club
as beginners, but the older students show them how to play so that after
six months or a year they have enough skills to play in an orchestra.
The club now has over 50 tunes in its repertoire. Next year, it plans
to add more, including the theme from the movie Star Wars.

Activities
2: Kendo Club
"Yaa! Eiii!"
The room is filled with shouts as members of the kendo club draw their
bamboo swords. The floorboards shake as the students clash swords and
move nimbly. The club consists of 9 girls and 17 boys, led by three faculty
advisors. The club meets five times a week. Usually, it's just basic practice,
but today, the students are getting ready for a prefectural meet, so they
are clashing swords and working on speed with more enthusiasm than usual.

The music
club is the most popular club, with about 120 members. The students
meet in a room with more than 13 different types of instruments, including
violins, cellos, flutes, clarinets, trumpets, tubas, and percussion
instruments. Right now the students are playing the theme song from
the movie E.T. while their teacher, Kensuke Nomura, conducts.
Mr. Nomura, a violinist, is a faculty advisor for the music club. He
pays close attention to all of the students' musical efforts.
