The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan constructed Subaru, a special telescope, on the top of Mt. Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Subaru is the largest single-mirror telescope in the world; its mirror is 8.2 meters (about 27 feet) wide. Since Subaru saw its "first light" (the first time a new telescope is used) in January 1999, it has produced fantastic results.
