The annual International Japanese English Translation conference (IJET) was established by the Japan Association of Translators (JAT) in 1990 and has since evolved into a highly successful event that brings together language practitioners from all over the world.

The next conference, IJET-20, will be held in Sydney on 14-15 February 2009 and is shaping up to become a very special event. The Consul-General of Japan in Sydney will open the conference, the keynote speaker is social anthropologist Dr Fiona Graham, the Japan Foundation is lending its invaluable support, and the organizing committee has searched far and wide for speakers that denizens of the T&I world will really want to hear.

In terms of general sessions involving the participation of both T&I practitioners and industry professionals, there will be a number of streams including Literature, Business, Translation Tools, Medical/Pharma, Legal, Interpreting, and diverse other topics of interest such as patents, subtitling, client acquisition, translation services from a user’s perspective, AQTF (Australian Qualifications and Training Framework), manga, building a collaborative online J<>E dictionary, translation workshops and panel discussions, not to mention a Pecha Kucha-style event made up of short, snappy presentations. Add to this a zenyasai party cruise on the harbour, a banquet in a historic university setting, and plenty of opportunities for socializing and extracurricular activities, and you have an event that you won't want to miss. Note that attendance at the conference counts as a professional development (PD) activity for practitioners required to collect PD credit points.

Click on the Register link to sign up. Applications for advertising are now also being accepted, with details on available packages to be found on the site. There is also is a list for participants of IJET-20 who want to discuss the conference or just e-mingle. Non-participants are also welcome to join.
