Above right: On January 1, several hundred thousand people make their first shrine visit of the year here in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, hoping for health and happiness during the coming year. The road to the shrine stretches north-south from Yuigahama Beach through the center of the city.

Shonan Coast beach in summer

The Shonan Coast faces Sagami Bay, and during the swimming season in July and August beaches are packed with families and young couples. The colorful swimwear and beach umbrellas brighten up the long stretch of sand.
