One of Sado's most spectacular events is the demon drum show, Onidaiko. Performers wear fearsome masks and dance while beating huge drums. The powerful sound of the drums, called Ondeko in the local dialect, will send shivers down your spine. |

Sado has many historic temples. The 5-storied pagoda at Myosen-ji Temple is about 24 m high, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government. |

Sado Okesa is Japan's most famous folksong. At the Sado Community Center in Aikawa-machi, the Okesa Preservation Society in the town presents songs and traditional dances every day from April 20 to the end of October. |

Bunya ningyo puppet shows are a hit on Sado. The repertory contains more than 50 plays, many with the same stories as bunraku plays. The Koei-za Theater puts on puppet shows four times a day at Silver Village Sado, from April to November. |

A priest came from Kyoto to convert the islanders to Buddhism, and is said to have founded Seisui-ji Temple in 808. The platform extending from the Main Hall is thought to be a copy of the one at the famous temple, Kiyomizu-dera, in Kyoto. |

The Haku'undai Lookout, 850 m above sea level, is beside the highway that leads northeast from the old gold mines. From here you can get a good view of both Ryotsu Bay and Mano Bay. |
