Japan Travelogue Matsuyama

(1)   The original castle lord's residence was reconstructed in the ninomaru enclosure according to the design preserved in an old illustration. The building is located in the Ninomaru Historical Garden.

(2)   The main tower of Matsuyama Castle soars above the honmaru (main enclosure) at the top of a hill called Katsu-yama.

(4)   The citrus grove in the Ninomaru Historical Garden has a number of varieties of mikan oranges, all specialties of Ehime Prefecture.

(5)   Tonashi Mon ("No Door Gate") guards the main enclosure, the central part of the castle grounds. For some reason, the gate never had a door.

(6)   The Shinrokaku Tower stands at the top of the main bath hall at Dogo Hot Spring. At 6:00 a.m., noon, and 6:00 p.m., the tower's crimson glass windows open wide. Then the big drum in the tower booms out the time.

(7)   Iwazeki-bashi Bridge in the gorge formed by a river called Ishite-gawa.

(8)   The Gudabutsu-an Hermitage, where the famous novelist, Natsume Soseki, lived while teaching in Matsuyama. It burned down during World War II, but was reconstructed in 1982.

(9)   A pilgrim following the Buddhist temple circuit in Shikoku. She said she had already walked about 800 km to Matsuyama.
