Czerni has a number of self-defense units to battle its enemies. The weakest one is Unit Seventeen, headed by a girl named Nina. Nina desperately wants to recruit new members for the unit. When she sees Layfon using his special powers to break up the fight, she tries to get him to join Unit Seventeen. Layfon does not want to go fight any more, but he is moved by the strength of Nina's, Meishen's, and his other classmates' feelings. Gradually he starts to think that he would like to become a warrior after all.

Against a dramatic backdrop of battles and other events, the students of Czerni discover their own abilities and learn about love. They grow more courageous, come to love people, and find out what they are capable of doing. The story sends an encouraging message to young people that you can succeed if you try your best, and this may be one of the biggest reasons for its popularity.
