Between late June and mid-July, Sumitomo Life Insurance Co. conducted a survey of 6,000 people across Japan in which they asked respondents to give a single kanji (Sino-Japanese character) that best describes their image of their native region.

In August 2002 an unusual visitor swam up the Tama River that flows between Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures: a seal. The seal was seen swimming in the river and sunbathing on the concrete banks. Named after the river, "Tama-chan" became a national celebrity, attracting large crowds to the river. Experts said Tama-chan probably got lost, since he is of a type that usually lives in the Arctic Ocean.

This summer, 42 young people from seven Asian countries took part in a special program to learn about the environment. The participants came from India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, all countries facing different sorts of environmental problems. The 16-day program began on August 1, and the highlight was a 10-day voyage in which the participants traveled by ship from Okinawa to Yokohama, stopping at a number of places in Japan along the way. On this trip they learned about global environmental problems from famous people who gave them lessons on the ship and at the different stops, as well as by taking part in lots of hands-on activities.

Adventurer Ken'ichi Horie completed the first-ever solar-powered solo voyage across the Pacific Ocean on August 5, 1996, after 138 days at sea. The 57-year-old yachtsman arrived in Tokyo after sailing 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) from Ecuador in South America in a boat named Malt's Mermaid.
