| Tokyo has a full range of places to stay, from youth hostels
to Japanese-style inns and Western-style hotels. There are about 50 first-class
hotels around the city, including both foreign-based and domestic names, and quite
a few of them are concentrated in the West Shinjuku area. Needless to say, guests
at these hotels can expect services of the highest caliber in the world. At the
Japan Hotel
Association' s website, visitors can check out the room availability at 29
hotels and make reservations as well.
More information on hotels in West Shinjuku can be found in the Walking Around
section.
For a more authentic taste of Japanese hospitality, staying at a ryokan - a
Japanese-style inn - is recommended. Sleeping in a futon laid out on a tatami
floor should prove to be a memorable experience. Like Western-style hotels, ryokan
range from pricey luxury inns to low-priced lodgings for backpackers. Many of
them, particularly the cheaper inns, offer family-style hospitality. A listing
of hotels and Japanese-style inns in Tokyo can be found on the website of the
Tokyo
Hotel Ryokan Associaton.
The Tokyo
on a Shoestring section provides additional information on budget inns.
As for youth hostels, only four can be found in Tokyos 23 wards, including
both publicly and privately operated facilities. But all of them are situated
favorably and charge low fares, so many visitors from overseas stay at these youth
hostels.
