| Shinjuku started out as an inn town in the Edo
period (1603-1868), back when Tokyo was known as Edo. Now Shinjuku is one
of Tokyo's foremost shopping districts, and even today it is constantly growing
and changing. Shinjuku Station, one of the biggest and most well-known transit
stations in Japan, serves six Japan Rail railway lines, three private railway
lines, and three subway lines. With over 1.6 million passengers a day passing
through the station, the flow of human traffic never lets up in this bustling
district. |
