| After indulging in traditional culture, you may find it refreshing
to experience Japan's cutting-edge technology. Occupying the first through fifth
floors of the Sony Building
in Ginza, Tokyo, is the Sony Showroom. Here visitors can actually try out Sony's
newest products, and attendants are at hand to provide guidance and explanations.
The center of attention at the showroom currently is AIBO,
Sony's autonomous entertainment robot. AIBO was introduced to the world as a dog-shaped
robot, and subsequently newer versions modeled after other young animals have
come out. Like a real creature, it changes its behavior depending on how a person
interacts with it and has the ability to learn. More and more people are attracted
by the comforting effect that the robotic pet, much like live ones, has on humans.
AIBO's advantage over real pets is that it will always be its lovable self without
ever having to be fed or walked, and this may be a major reason why it has become
so popular with busy city dwellers.
