Philippe Pierre Pelletier was born in Bordeaux,
France, in 1959. He studied photography at the Association de la Recherche Photographique
in Bordeaux from 1981-1983. He traveled in Asia and Oceania from 1983-1990. This
was when he first visited Tokyo, where he has lived since 1984. Exhibitions of
his black and white photographs were subsequently held in Tokyo. From 1990 to
1993 he worked as an assistant photographer for the National Museums Photographic
Agency in Paris, specializing in art reproduction for the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay,
and Picasso Museum.
Since 1994 he has worked as a photo journalist, taking photos for France
Japon éco, and as a contract photographer of Nippon News. He is pursuing
personal research about presence in photography. Solo and group exhibitions of
his work were held in Tokyo in 1999-2002. The allure of the big city is what attracted
him to Tokyo. He sees Tokyo as the translation of village peace onto a much bigger
and brighter scale. Here is a selection of his pictures of Tokyo.
