| It is eight o'clock on a Monday morning, and trains come rolling
in to the platforms of Shinjuku Station at the rate of one every two or three
minutes. Their doors open and they disgorge waves of commuters, who are instantly
replaced by other crowds of people waiting on the platforms.
Shinjuku Station is a hub where numerous train and subway lines converge. More
than 3 million people travel through this station each day, making it the busiest
station on earth. It is just one hub station on the Yamanote Line, though. This
loop route rings central Tokyo, surrounding an area serviced mainly by subways
and serving as the hub for the spokes that head away from the center of the city.
With all these lines to choose from - and more than 500 stations in the Tokyo
region, more than other cities like Paris or New York - it's easy for
first-time visitors (and even long-time residents) to get lost, so people generally
carry a railway map or take constant glances at the charts displayed in the stations.
