The Omotesando area overlaps another stylish district, Aoyama, which extends
along and around Aoyama-dori street from the Crown Prince's Palace in Akasaka
to Shibuya. On the south side of Aoyama-dori near the Aoyama-Itchome subway station
lies Aoyama Cemetery, established in 1872 as the city's first burial ground not
affiliated with a specific shrine or temple. It is the biggest cemetery in Tokyo's
23 wards, and its greenery and the occasional whiff of incense in the air make
it a nice place for a quiet stroll. Aoyama Cemetery is famous as the final resting
spot for many politicians, scholars, artists, and other luminaries, including
Shigeru Yoshida (1878-1967) - the Japanese prime minister in 1946-47 and 1948-1954
- and the novelist Naoya Shiga (1883-1971).
The Shibuya-Harajuku-Aoyama area is a multifaceted, highly walkable part of Tokyo
that has something for everyone.
