Rapid progress is being made on a joint public-private venture to redevelop a vast tract (about 31 hectares) of vacant land between Shinbashi and Hamamatsu-cho Stations. The Shiodome Shiosite complex is being built on a disused freight station. A high-rise condominium completed in autumn 2002 was the first in a series of glass-walled skyscrapers that will grace the area. When the project is finished in 2006, more than 10 skyscrapers will tower over the city, forming a new urban center that will accommodate 61,000 workers and 6,000 residents. It will be almost as if a corner of New York has been transplanted to Tokyo.

Populated by the new premises of television companies and other media players, three major hotels, and the headquarters of famous corporations, this district will be a new base for Tokyo business. One part of the project already attracting attention is an Italian district known as Citta Italia, which will open in November 2003. Tokyo's very own "Little Italy" will feature restaurants and shops direct from Italy and will, by 2006, be lined with more than 30 Italian-style buildings.
