| In the 1980s and early 1990s the focus of urban redevelopment
projects was on peripheral areas of Tokyo, raising fears that the center of the
capital would lose its vitality. To counter these fears, in the mid-1990s the
public and private sectors began working together to plan the redevelopment of
the area around Tokyo Station. The first stage of this project was completed when
the new 37-story Marunouchi Building opened in September 2002.
This building lies in the heart of the Marunouchi-Otemachi district, one of Japan's
top business hubs. Unlike the old Marunouchi Building, which was basically an office
building, the new one has five floors of shops and four floors of restaurants,
and these attractions have made it a top spot for fun-loving Tokyoites. This area
is home to more than 10 other projects, including the redevelopment of the vacant
land next to Tokyo Station that was formerly occupied by the Japan National Railways
headquarters.
