About This Site
This year, 2003, marks the 400th year since Edo (now Tokyo) became the seat of national government. Commemorating this anniversary, Web Japan has newly launched TOKYO Past and Present, a site that introduces modern-day Tokyo and its historical background. We hope that TOKYO Past and Present will prompt many people from abroad to visit Tokyo, but we will also strive to make the site interesting and informative to viewers who cannot visit the capital.

The central theme of this site is Edo. In order to give viewers a well-rounded knowledge of Tokyo, we will introduce not only aspects of the present-day city but also what Edo, Japan’s political capital in the Edo period, was like and how it developed over the centuries. TOKYO Past and Present will present a picture of the megalopolis from a wider angle than that of the conventional tour guide.
