Island Hopping by Bike

There are three routes across the Seto Inland Sea linking the islands of Shikoku and Honshu. One of them - linking Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture - is a set of 10 bridges connecting six islands. This roughly 80-kilometer route across the sea is known as the Shimanami Kaido.

A unique feature of this route is that it has special paths for pedestrians and bicycles separate from the roads for cars. This is a great place for cycling and enjoying views of the Seto Inland Sea. The bridges are about 50-70 meters above the sea so as not to block ships, and the view from that height is fantastic. Cyclists can see the Inland Seas famous whirlpools, ships traveling between the islands, and beautiful sunsets. The rising and falling slopes of the bridges can make pedaling difficult at times, but the views will take your breath away.
