Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost island and makes up some 20% of the country's total land mass. Nature is abundant on this broad expanse of land. Hokkaido boasts many sights, including Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage site; Kushiro Marsh, Japan's largest marsh; and beautiful towns that have served as locations for TV series. While the winter cold can be quite bitter, this northern region offers its own brand of fun in its white world of snow.
