There were 121,812 registered foreign students as of May 2005. Of these, 110,018 were privately funded students, 9,891 were on Japanese government scholarships, and 1,903 were receiving financial support from their own country’s government. The largest share came from China (66.2%), followed by the Republic of Korea (12.8%) and Taiwan (3.4%). These three countries and regions alone account for 82.3% of the foreign students in Japan.
