Chrome Shelled Regios is a fantasy about a group of students who struggle to survive in a world whose air and land are contaminated. This bestselling science-fiction novel has been adapted as a television anime, which went on the air in January 2009.

The story is set in the distant future, at a time when the Earth and its atmosphere have been contaminated with poison. The world is filled with mobile cities called regios, which have metal legs, move around of their own accord like living things, and are home to people.

Regios are covered by a layer of air, and the air within them is clean. People have no choice but to live on one, since breathing the atmosphere outside world would mean certain death. The regios occasionally come under attack by ferocious creatures called osenju, which live on the contaminated land and feed on people. To repel the creatures, they call upon the services of warriors with superhuman powers known as bugeisha.
