Q. What events take place in spring?

Hinamatsuri on March 3 is a festival day for girls.
Tango no Sekku on May 5 celebrates the healthy growth of boys.

A.

One event many young girls look forward to is Hinamatsuri, or the Doll Festival, celebrated on March 3 each year. On this day, families pray for the healthy growth of girls by displaying tiers of dolls of the emperor and empress of ancient times and their courtly attendants. The display is decorated with peach blossoms, diamond-shaped rice cakes, and offerings of sweet drink made from fermented rce.

In April people flock under cherry trees in parks and elsewhere with their families and friends to enjoy watching cherry blossoms in full bloom while eating boxed meals and sweets. It's an event that is enjoyed not just by children but also by adults.

May 5 was originally a day to celebrate the healthy growth of boys. But it is now called Children's Day, a national holiday to pray for the health not just of boys but girls as well. Dolls of warriors are put on display inside the house on this day, and giant carp streamers (called koinobori) are hung on poles outside as a symbol of strength and perseverance.
